how to mirror miktex?

Sharuzzaman Ahmat Raslan
Hi,

I have filled in the contact form in miktex website last week, in order to
ask Christian Schenk on how to mirror miktex on my own server.

Since I did not receive any response from him, I'm asking the wisdom of the
community on how to achieve this task?

Also, CTAN listed http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/CTAN/systems/win32/miktex/
and http://mirror.aut.ac.nz/CTAN/systems/win32/miktex/as a miktex mirror,
but if I perform update, this site is not in the list of select able source.

How does miktex detemnine which site to show to customer?

Any help to get my mirror up and running is highly appreciated.

Thanks

I'd simply do a full download. It's an option on the install.

However, if you have reliable internet service and expect to be on-line, what is the point of a full download? MikTeX will download on the fly which is much more efficient. You do not need the full LaTeX.

Re: how to mirror miktex?

Hi,

I'm not looking into downloading full miktex packages into my laptop, but
I'm planning to create mirror for Malaysia and other country in South East
Asia region.

Looking at https://miktex.org/pkg/repositories , there are no mirrors in
Malaysia, Indonesia and even Singapore.

I would like to know the process on getting miktex mirrored, and also
getting the mirror listed in the repositories

Thanks

I would send a note to Ulrike directly. She might not know, but she should know where to look.

I have no idea. I would have thought that you need to setup a CTAN
mirror but I don't know if this is correct -- it doesn't look as if
every CTAN mirror is also a miktex repository.

So imho the only thing one can do is to wait for an answer of
Christian.

Yes, every CTAN mirror is a MiKTeX mirror. Provided

- it is listed in CTAN.sites
- it is online
- it has the current MiKTeX package set
- it does not block IP addresses from country "XYZ"

Re: how to mirror miktex?

Sharuzzaman Ahmat Raslan
Hi Christian,

Thank you for the information.

I have additional question:

# - it has the current MiKTeX package set

How is the current package set is being determined? I browsed
http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/CTAN/systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages and
found that the latest packages is yesterday, but it is not in miktex mirror
list.

miktex-zzdb2-2.9.tar.lzma 09-Feb-2017 08:20 882K

# - it does not block IP addresses from country "XYZ"

Any reason you apply this policy? I lived in Australia currently, and I
believe I should be able to download from Australia mirror listed in CTAN,
such as mirror.aarnet.edu.au or nearer mirror such as mirror.aut.ac.nz .

But with this policy, I have to download from Japan or USA, which is more
further than Australia or New Zealand, and causing the download to be
slower.

The Update Miktex application have the option "I want to get updated
packages from a remote package repository", but it does not allow me to
manually select Australia or New Zealand mirror that are not listed in
https://miktex.org/pkg/repositories

At least if there is an option to manually select other mirror, you could
maintain the policy, but user are free to select mirror that are
geo-restricted

Thanks

The repository contains file 'pr.ini'. This file has a line like

version=6249

You can compare this version to the one noted on https://miktex.org

I have reports that a CTAN mirror in country "XXX" actively blocks
downloads by country "YYY" users. For political and/or religious
reasons. I don't know. The mirror in "XXX" is not used by the update wizard.

I do know several mirror operator in Malaysia are blocking access from
certain country due to excessive hacking attempt. The goal of a mirror to
provide access to user in that country, so when too many hacking attempt
from a particular country, it is logical to block that country, in order to
provide service to legitimate user inside the country of the mirror.

But, I don't really care about the motives of the mirror admin. What I do
care is, with this exclusion policy, you are not actually punishing the
mirror operator, but in reality, you are punishing miktex user in that
country. In my case, I'm a legitimate miktek user, but I cannot access
Malaysia mirror when I'm in Malaysia, due to this policy, and I also cannot
access Australia mirror when I'm in Australia, also due to this policy.

Mirror admin did not really care if they are being excluded, because most
of them did not even get any benefit from hosting the mirror, but it is
miktex and the end user that will benefit from having the mirror. My friend
who is writing his thesis, could consider using miktex on windows, but
because he is on slow internet and no mirror available in Malaysia, he
might just move to Texlive on windows that did not do any mirror exclusion.

So, I would really like to suggest to you to remove the exclusion of
mirrors, and give user the freedom to choose their own mirror, without
being dictated which mirror that they should connect, and being dragged
into the policy war between miktex owner and mirror admins

Thanks.
