Beamer question

Taylor, Robert
Hi all,

I have been trying to use beamer on MikTex.  Any help/experience you have on this would be greatly appreciated.  I seem to get errors depending on which theme I use.  For example, when using \usetheme{CambridgeUS} I get the following error when I compile:

(C:\Users\Rob\AppData\Roaming\MiKTeX\2.9\tex\latex\beamer\base\themes\outer\bea
merouterthemeinfolines.sty
! Undefined control sequence.
\Gm@rmargin ->\Geom@rmargin

l.52 ...ext margin left=1em,text margin right=1em}

?

So, unable to do much else, I hit return ....

! Missing number, treated as zero.
<to be read again>
                   \relax
l.52 ...ext margin left=1em,text margin right=1em}

?

And hit return again ...

! Illegal unit of measure (pt inserted).
<to be read again>
                   \relax
l.52 ...ext margin left=1em,text margin right=1em}

?

And again and it now carries on as below from the log file.  The PDF is created but is not aligned correctly (the PDF is chopped off at the top and has white space  at the bottom).  So it seems to be suggesting a problem in a particular .sty file but that was just downloaded from CTAN so it seems odd ....  I have processed this same file on the ios TexWriter package and also on Scientific Word and it processes fine on both with no errors and looks like it should.

Re: Beamer question

Thompson,Paul-2
That actually looks like a geometry bug. You may wish to download and reinstall geometry.

Best to show a small file with the error. It may not be beamer.

Re: Beamer question

Taylor, Robert
Hi Paul,

Thanks very much for your answers.  Much appreciated.  I'll have a look at seeing if I can sort that.   However since it took me almost a day just to get the miktex system working I am not so hopeful :)

Cheers, Rob

Re: Beamer question

Taylor, Robert
In reply to this post by Thompson,Paul-2
Thanks Paul.  I should stress that all the files were downloaded via the miktex easy installer from the CTAN website meaning if there is a conflict in the Beamer and geometry files then it is a conflict present in the versions that the miktex easy installer is downloading from the central repository.    There is a response in this Google link you give suggesting the matter is closed and resolved but since I obviously downloaded all the files using the miktex easy installer that suggests the problem is not actually resolved at all and still persists.

Best wishes,
Rob

Re: Beamer question

Thompson,Paul-2
MikTeX is just a distribution. They don't test, reconcile, or otherwise coordinate. It's a huge system. Since it's open source, there is also an implied notion that folks check alternative explanations.

Re: Beamer question

Taylor, Robert
Which I guess is why people who just want something that actually works without needing a degree in computer science and unlimited free time to get it working buy packages like scientific word or tex writer!!

Re: Beamer question

Thompson,Paul-2
Since I have been using tex-like systems since 1983, I am used to figuring stuff out. I keep thinking I should write a blog post on "How to solve problems in LaTeX".

Which I guess is why people who just want something that actually works without needing a degree in computer science and unlimited free time to get it working buy packages like scientific word or tex writer!!

There are several excellent books available. For instance, I have used,
"The LaTeX Companion", second edition by Frank Mittelbach and Michael
Goossens may times. There are several other examples though.

If the "easy installer" means the basic version, you should run the
update managers (admin and user) after the installation as
recommended in the installation instructions at the end:
http://www.miktex.org/howto/install-miktex

It also a good idea to synchronize the package managers and check if
there are new packages

https://tex.stackexchange.com/a/108490/2388

On my system there is no problem, but as you didn't show the
log-file I can't compare the versions info.

That's not the problem. The problem is, how do you hack LaTeX to get it to work? Yes, the LaTeX Companion (base, graphics, web), is a super resource. However, when you have a problem, what do you do?
